Gedenktafel für Béla Kovács

Die Gedenktafel zu Erinnerung an Béla Kovács wurde am 22. Februar 1992 eingeweiht. Initiiert wurde sie von der unabhängigen Partei der Kleinlandwirte (FKGP) und dem ungarischen Bauernverband. Béla Kovács wurde am 20. April 1908 in Patacs, heute Teil der Stadt Pécs, geboren. Nach dem Besuch der Volksschule absolvierte er Fachkurse für Landwirtschaft und arbeitete ab 1926 als Landwirt. 1933 trat er in die unabhängige Partei der Kleinlandwirte (FKGP) ein, wo er 1939 zum stellvertretenden Generalsekretär und Parlamentskandidaten gewählt wurde. Ab 1941 hatte er das Amt des Generalsekretärs der FKGP inne. Nach der Befreiung Ungarns 1944/45 war er vorübergehend Staatssekretär des Inneren und später Landwirtschaftsminister in der Provisorischen Regierung von Debrecen. 1945 gab er seinen Ministerposten auf und übernahm erneut die Führung der Partei. Am 25. Februar 1947 wurde Kovács von sowjetischen Behörden verhaftete und ohne Gerichtsverhandlung zu 20 Jahren Zwangsarbeit verurteilt. Die gegen ihn erhobenen Vorwürfe lauteten auf Vorbereitung einer Verschwörung gegen die Ungarische Republik. Seine Haft verbrachte Kovács in verschiedenen Lagern der Sowjetunion. 1955 wurde er von dort nach Ungarn verbracht, jedoch erst im April 1956 freigelassen. Während der Revolution 1956 setzte sich Kovács für die Wiedergründung seiner inzwischen verbotenen Partei ein. Am 3. November 1956, einen Tag vor der zweiten sowjetischen Invasion, wurde er zum Generalsekretär der FKGP gewählt und zum Landwirtschaftsminister der Nagy-Regierung ernannt. Nach dem 4. November 1956 bemühte er sich um einen Ausgleich mit der Ungarischen Sozialistischen Arbeiterpartei unter Kádár. Im November 1958 wurde Kovács Abgeordneter des ungarischen Parlaments, konnte jedoch aufgrund seines schlechten Gesundheitszustandes dieses Amt nicht mehr wahrnehmen. Am 21. Juni 1959 verstarb er in Pécs.

Memorial Plaque for Béla Kovács

The memorial plaque commemorating Béla Kovács was dedicated on February 22, 1992. It was initiated by the Independent Party of Small Landholders (FKGP) and the Association of Hungarian Farmers. Béla Kovács was born on April 20, 1908 in Patacs, which is a part of the city Pécs today. After attending grade school, he finished technical courses in agrarian studies and began working as a farmer after 1926. In 1933, he joined the Independent Party of Small Landholders (FKGP), and was elected its Deputy General Secretary and parliamentary candidate in 1939. Following 1940, he occupied the position of General Secretary of the FKGP. After the liberation of Hungary 1944/45, Kovács was for a time State Secretary of the Interior, and later, Minister of Agriculture in the Provisional Government of Debrecen. In 1945, he withdrew from his ministerial positions and resumed leadership of the Party once again. On February 25, 1947, Kovács was arrested by the Soviet authorities and sentenced to twenty years of hard labour without any legal proceedings. He was accused of preparations to conspire against the Hungarian republic. Kovács spent his period of imprisonment in various camps in the Soviet Union. In 1955, he was returned from there to Hungary, but first released in April 1956. During the 1956 Revolution, Kovács actively fought for the reinstatement of his Party, which had been banned in the meantime. One day prior to the second invasion of Soviet troops, he was elected General Secretary of the FKGP and was appointed Minister of Agriculture in the Nagy government. Following November 4, 1956, Kovács worked towards reconciliation with the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party under the leadership of Kádár. In November 1958, Kovács became a Representative in the Hungarian Parliament, but was no longer able to fulfil the function due to his poor health. Kov dies on June 21, 1959 in Pécs.
